What The Monday Night Football Game Means To The NFC

The Monday Night Football match-up this week was an instant classic. Points a plenty, drives ending with scores occured so many times it was like deja vu, over and over again.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys started the work week off with a bang as everyone was talking about the 72 yard touchdown bomb to Terrell Owens in the first quarter and Donovan McNabb and his elusivness. Now that #5 is healthy he can do all the things we watched him do when he took the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Oh and lets not forget the great play by Desean Jackson who tossed the ball away like a hot coal running in stride well before he crossed the end zone.

The shootout in big D although exciting proved a slew of things for the rest of the teams in the NFC. First lets look in the division and see how this game will impact the rest of the season. For the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins this game was a win-win.Both the Giants and Redskins won their games this week, the Giants were a 41-13 winner over St. Louis and the Redskins shocked the Saints winning their game 29-25. The defense didnt fly to Dallas with the rest of the team. The quarterbacks threw for 593 yards, the running backs ran for 168 yards, 4 sacks and 1 interception from the defense. They might as well just had the offense play both sides of the field.

The Eagles and Cowboys combined for 78 points, 54 of which came in the first half. It was the second-most points in the first half of a Monday Night Football game and the most combined points in the 98-game rivalry between the two teams.

The Washington Redskins are the worst team in the NFC East, that still means they are around an 8-8 team. I believe they will get beaten by the both the Eagles and the Cowboys when they meet up. The Giants are a different story. The Super Bowl Champion New York Giants have the best defense in the league. And after the debochary that was on display on the defensive side of the ball on Monday night, I am now convinced. Once any of these 2 teams face off against the Giants they will be in for a rude awakening. They will have to face a relentless defense that has a knack for the quarterback and the ball. Justin Tuck is quickly climbing the defensive ladder and is in my opinion already a top 5 defensive player in the league. On the opposite end Mathias Kiwanuka is very wuick off the edge as well. The New York Giants defense has only allowed 20 points in 2 games and 7 was in garbage time of last weeks blow out. In 2 games the Giants defense have recorded 7 sacks, 1 interception, 1 touchdown.

Everyone is over looking the Giants in the NFC. They are 2-0 but are getting no love for their great defense. Other teams in the NFC like the Packers and the Vikings with good defenses will give them (the Cowboys)trouble as well. If a team can go back and forth in a shootout with the Eagles and the Cowboys they have a good chance of winning. The lack of defense and just overall effort out of the defense proved a lot. It seemed like the defense just wanted to watch like the rest of the fans across America.

Yes these 2 teams are still top 5 in the NFC but they have their flaws and the best part about that is that it took them playing each other so early in the season for everyone else to see that. Defense wins games, and defense will expose both the Eagles and the Cowboys.
